Technology finally meets expectations. LED’s – now illuminate much of the world in areas ranging from commercial lighting to computers and televisions. Commercial and industrial property owners face a growing concern regarding operating expenses, energy consumption, and sustainability. Reducing energy waste is among the top priorities for any sound financial plan. Switching to a more energy efficient and sustainable light source, like LED lighting, will reduce energy consumption, increase the lifetime of your lighting assets, and reduce your environmental impact.
LET GREEN LUMENS SIMPLIFY YOUR MATH
Green Lumens® LED Lighting products create a cash flow positive solution to reducing operating expenses while benefitting the environment (WIN/WIN).
Let’s look at two real LED retrofit examples to support the preceding paragraph.
THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING, NEW YORK CITY
This high profile building has two (2) stairwells, each with 103 floors. There are single 4’ 32W T8 fluorescent fixtures on each landing, and by building code, must be illuminated 24/7 (8760 hours a year).
Unique to New York City, photo luminescent tape is on both the stairs and handrails in the stairwells. The tape requires a minimum 2fc of light to keep charged. In the event of a power outage, the tape will emit a glow to allow people in the stairwell to navigate the stairs without being in the dark.
Green Lumens® was challenged with the task of reducing energy consumption in the stairwells without compromising the required 2fc for the photo luminescent tape. Here is how we did it, by the numbers:
Green Lumens® designed a bi-level sensor that operates their 18W LED linear lamp at 6W until activated by either motion or sound, at which time it illuminates at 100% or a full 18W. At 6W, the LED linear lamp exceeds the 2fc requirement to keep the photo luminescent tape charged (Independently tested by NYC Engineering firm and accepted by NYC Fire Department to meet fire codes).
The stairwells are void of foot traffic 90% of the time, therefore, the LED linear lamp consumes only 6W 90% of the time and 18W 10% of the time, averaging 7.2W.
The simple math:
Original Fluorescent Lamp | 32W | Green Lumens® LED linear lamp | 7.2W |
No Ballast | 3W | Original Lamp Ballast | 0.0W |
LED linear lamp with bi-level sensor | 35W | Total Energy Consumed | 7.2W |
---|
27.8W Saved x 8760 Hours/Yr. x $0.19/Kw-H = $46.27 Energy Saved/Lamp/Year.
Miami Dade Police Headquarters
The Miami Dade Police Headquarters is very concerned about the safety of their officers. The parking lot on all sides of the property was not sufficiently lit to assure the safety of its officers at night. Dark areas of the lot offered allowed for unwanted persons to roam unseen at night, posing a danger to the officers. Green Lumens® was asked to improve the lighting conditions in a timely manner, while being sensitive to budgets.
Our first course of business was to gather a survey of the property and create a photometric report using data (IES files) for the existing 250W Metal Halide fixtures, and identify the locations of the dark areas. Secondly, we created a photometric report using the data (IES files) from our 200W LED retrofit kit and overlaid the results on the first photometric to measure the foot candle improvements and determine if we needed to modify beam angles (using optical lenses) of the LED retrofits to enhance light levels in specific areas. The results are as follows:
The simple math:
Original Metal Halide Lamp | 250W | Green Lumens® LED Retrofit Kit | 200W |
Original MH Ballast | 60W | Original Lamp Ballast | 0.0W |
Total Energy Consumed | 310W | LED Retrofit Kit | 200W |
---|
110W Saved x 4380 Hours/Yr. x $0.09/Kw-H = $43.36 Energy Saved/Lamp/Year.
Not only did Green Lumens® reduce the Energy Expense with the 200W LED Retrofit Kit, we increased the foot candle levels and eliminated the dark areas of the lot. The LED Retrofit Kit allowed us to immediately begin the project without the delay of permitting, since we did not change fixtures or alter the wind load calculations for the existing poles.
